How would you describe yourself: Quiet, easy going, and lacking in common sense.
What attracted you to drumming:I was introduced to the world famous paradiddle when I was 3 years old, but didn't start playing "properly" til I was 13 after watching the video for "Smells Like Teen Spirit" by Nirvana. Watching Dave Grohl pound away inspired me to take lessons.
What does drumming mean to you: Above everything, it's lot's of fun, and it's the best way for me to express myself. It's also allowed me to meet some great people, from the musicians and bands I've played with, the students I teach, and other people with a passion for music.
Drumming strengths:I'm pretty good at breaking cymbals! I'd say my main strength is versatility, adapting my playing to suit various styles/ genres. I was lucky enough to have a great teacher at college who taught me stuff like latin, samba, jazz etc, which really opened my mind and showed me there's more than just being a hard hitting rock drummer!
Advice to up and coming drummers / pupils: Listen to music, and learn how it works. Learning the technical side of drumming is important, but you need to know how to apply it. Jam with other musicians as much as you can, it's the best way to progress as a musician. Practice your rudiments (seriously, you'll be amazed what a difference it'll make!) but most of all, have fun. That's what it's all about.
